She Weighed Only Eight Pounds and Could Barely Lift Her Head — But Dona Refused to Stop Fighting

A Tiny French Bulldog Found on the Edge of Survival

The little dog lying by the roadside barely looked alive.

Her body was thin and fragile, far smaller than it should have been. For a French Bulldog puppy, her weight was shockingly low — barely eight pounds, almost half of what a healthy dog her age would normally weigh.

Her name would later become Dona.

When rescuers first approached her, she didn’t try to run. She didn’t even try to move. Her face was swollen, and one of her small legs appeared badly injured. The exhaustion in her eyes suggested that she had been struggling for a long time before anyone noticed her.

Her body was so weak that even breathing seemed to require effort.

But she was still alive.

And that meant there was still hope.

A Race to the Emergency Clinic

The rescuer carefully lifted Dona and rushed her to an emergency veterinary clinic known as CAVI.

At first, the veterinarians said her condition was stable enough to begin treatment. But the people caring for her could see how fragile she truly was. Her body trembled with weakness, and the night that followed felt endless.

Blood tests were performed.

Medication was administered.

And Dona was watched closely as the hours passed.

Her condition revealed more problems than anyone expected. Her small body was covered with ticks and fleas, signs that she had been neglected for far too long. Worse still, she refused food and soon began vomiting dark fluid repeatedly.

The veterinary team decided she needed to remain hospitalized under intensive care.

Ultrasounds were performed.

X-rays were taken.

Every test was aimed at answering the same question: could her body recover from so much damage?

Medical Challenges That Tested Everyone’s Strength

The diagnosis that followed was serious.

Dona was severely dehydrated, and her stomach had developed acute inflammation that prevented her from digesting food normally. Because her body could not tolerate eating, she had to receive nutrients and fluids through intravenous treatment.

There was also a painful infection near her head that required careful drainage. Veterinarians worked gently to relieve the pressure and begin controlling the infection.

Despite these treatments, the following days remained uncertain.

At one point, Dona experienced seizures, a frightening complication that made the veterinary team monitor her even more closely. Even after several days of care, she continued struggling to keep food down.

Further imaging showed that her digestive system had become partially obstructed due to inflammation.

Blood tests revealed additional concerns — her red blood cell levels had dropped while her white blood cell count had increased, signs that her body was fighting serious infection.

Specialized testing was performed to rule out other conditions. When the results remained unclear, the veterinary team made the difficult decision to perform advanced imaging using tomography.

The procedure required anesthesia — a risky step for a dog whose body was already so weak.

But it was the only way to understand what was happening inside her fragile body.

A Small Turning Point

While waiting for the results, the caregivers focused on helping Dona regain strength little by little.

She was offered liquid food while being supported upright so her stomach could tolerate it better. The process required patience and constant supervision.

Then, something remarkable happened.

Forty-eight hours passed without vomiting.

For the first time since arriving at the clinic, Dona’s body began showing signs that the treatment was working. The drainage from the infection near her head also began changing — the fluid became clearer, suggesting that the inflammation was slowly improving.

These were small changes.

But they meant everything.

The Kindness of a Community

As the days passed, the cost of Dona’s treatment continued to rise.

Her rescue team worried about how they could continue paying for the complex medical care she needed. Yet they refused to give up on her.

The director of the veterinary clinic offered generous support by reducing some of the treatment costs. At the same time, people who heard about Dona’s story began contributing what they could.

Each small donation helped extend her chance to recover.

And slowly, Dona herself began changing.

She started recognizing familiar voices. When the rescuers approached her, her tail moved gently for the first time. Sometimes she even leaned her head toward their hands, asking for a quiet moment of comfort.

Her body was still fragile.

But her spirit remained strong.

A Promise for the Future

Today, Dona is still continuing her journey toward recovery.

The road ahead remains uncertain, and her medical team continues to monitor her condition carefully. But the little French Bulldog who once lay helpless on the roadside now faces each day with quiet determination.

Her rescuers have made her a promise.

She will never be alone again.

One day, they hope she will walk along the beach, feel the ocean breeze, and rest peacefully on a soft bed in a home where she is loved.

For now, Dona continues to fight — one day at a time.

And the people who saved her are fighting right beside her.

Because sometimes all a fragile life needs is a single chance.

And Dona is determined to make that chance count.
