He Stepped Onto Fresh Tar Looking for Food — And Couldn’t Step Back

A Simple Search for Something to Eat

He wasn’t looking for trouble.

He was looking for food.

A hungry stray wandering the streets, nose low to the ground, following whatever scent might lead to a meal. It was late. The road was quiet.

And then, without knowing, he stepped into something he couldn’t see.

Freshly laid tar.

Still wet.

With each movement, his paws sank deeper. The more he struggled, the more the thick black surface clung to his fur, his legs, his body. Within moments, he was stuck.

Completely.

He could not move forward.

He could not turn back.

Exhaustion set in quickly. Panic followed.

And the road grew silent around him.

A Call That Came Just in Time

Thankfully, someone noticed.

Volunteers from the Panjim Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) rushed to the scene. What they found was heartbreaking — a small dog nearly encased in hardened tar, his body coated in black from paws to shoulders.

He was trembling.

Not from aggression.

From fear.

The team worked carefully to free him from the road surface, lifting him gently and transporting him to the clinic before the tar could fully harden and cause further damage.

It was a race against time.

The Long, Patient Cleaning Process

At the clinic, the real work began.

Removing tar is not quick.

It cannot be rushed.

The rescuers used cooking oil to soften the hardened material. Warm water. Gentle soap. Slow hands.

Again and again, they massaged the oil into his fur to loosen the tar. Then carefully wiped it away. Bit by bit.

There was no pulling.

No force.

Only patience.

The process took hours.

At times, he seemed unsure. But gradually, he began to relax. Perhaps he realized that the hands touching him were not there to harm — but to help.

Layer after layer, the black coating disappeared.

And underneath it, a frightened but very much alive dog emerged.

Strength Returning, One Day at a Time

After the tar was removed, his skin was treated for irritation. He was monitored closely for dehydration and stress.

Food was offered.

Water was given.

He rested.

In the days that followed, something beautiful happened.

His tail began to move.

Slowly at first.

Then freely.

He stood up without trembling. His wounds began to heal. Soft fur started growing back where it had been damaged.

The dog who once lay trapped on the road was now walking gently across clinic floors — curious, alert, alive.

From Panic to Peace

The transformation was not dramatic in appearance alone.

It was emotional.

He had gone from being immobilized and terrified…
to feeling safe enough to sleep deeply.

From fighting the pavement…
to trusting human hands.

Today, he continues recovering under care, growing stronger each day.

What began as a desperate search for food could have ended in tragedy.

Instead, it became a reminder.

That even in moments of helplessness, compassion can arrive.

And sometimes, all it takes to change a life is someone willing to kneel down, get their hands dirty, and gently clean away the darkness — one careful touch at a time.
